“Going from Dance Fitness and Yoga to drawing classes is a bit of a stretch, don’t you think?” That’s what one of my friends said to me the other day when I told her that I started a YouTube channel with drawing tutorials. I admit that on first glance, the connection between these activities is not that obvious, but that's exactly what creativity is! Finding a way when is no obvious path. I also have to admit that I couldn’t find a suitable category on Google, Facebook, Instagram or any other social media platform for my website, but isn’t being stuffed into a category or a box overrated and out-dated anyway?
Let me explain how this whole dance-balance-create idea fits together, without getting your synapses in a twist. It’s all quite simple really. Dance Fitness, Yoga and Art are all hobbies. I know the word 'hobby' sounds a bit old fashioned, but I believe that having a hobby is super important in the crazy world we live in today.
By definition, a hobby is an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure; pleasure being the operative word here. It’s all about loving what you do. Doing certain things out of love rather than being paid or fulfilling a responsibility is an essential part of life. Your hobby can turn a really difficult day at work around and transform it into rainbows, unicorns and fluffy pink sheep. Just imagine for a second, that after a rough day at work, you pop into your favourite dance or yoga class or doodle in your sketchbook on the commute home (obviously not if you're driving!)…it really can turn your mood around. But of course this will only work if these are activities you love doing.
The other connection between dance fitness, yoga and art is that these three activities actually support/compliment each other and balance each other out. The key word here is inspiration. In order to draw, paint, sculpt or craft, we need to feel and be inspired. Even though inspiration has a reputation for striking us randomly, that is not quite true - you can actually invite the muse to come out and play. Moving the body and slowing down a busy mind are proven methods to boost inspiration and unlock your creativity.
See where I’m going with this?
Working up a sweat in a dance fitness class and ridding your body of all stress and tension is a good start for you to feel inspired to create something on canvas, in the kitchen or in a sketchbook. Yoga comes in handy when the mind and body need listening to. Slowing yourself down after a busy day and paying attention to what you need and how you feel, creates space for the muse spring up with new inspiration. Finding a balance physically and mentally are direct invitations for extra inspiration. On a deeper level, creating art is wonderful way to process feelings and spend some quality-me time with yourself.
See! There is a method to the madness. Dancing, yoga and creating art are my favourite hobbies and there is nothing more enjoyable for me than sharing it with others and making new friends along the way. So, if you feel like starting a new hobby, why not visit me at CordiPower.com. I won’t sell you a subscription, ask you to download an app or lure you into a commitment. All my classes are offered separately and it is completely free to get started. Hopefully, I will see you soon in one of my classes or connect with you on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Skillshare.
And don’t forget: Find something you LOVE doing, DO it as often as you can and the HAPPY comes all on it’s own!
LOVE - DO - HAPPY
